The Whole World Is a Railroad Network

Two panels the meme is missing, and what they suggest about the one we’re living in.

There’s a meme going around — four panels, each captioned “5 minutes after invention of X,” each showing someone breathlessly explaining that the newest piece of technology is secretly the structure of reality.

The joke lands because the fourth panel is where we live. But the sequence is missing two entries, and they’re the two that make the pattern hardest to wriggle out of.

Bro, the whole world is a railroad network.

Herbert Spencer, in “The Social Organism” (1860), works out an extended anatomy of society and assigns the railways a specific organ. Roads and canals are the rudimentary vasculature of primitive societies; railways are the mature version. He points out, with evident satisfaction, that railways introduce something new to the social organism — paired channels carrying traffic in opposite directions, exactly as arteries and veins do in a well-developed animal. He then compares the number and speed of trains on trunk lines to the flow rate of blood through the great arteries, and notes that in both cases the activity falls off toward the periphery. This is not a passing simile. It is a page of sustained physiological accounting.

Bro, the whole world is a telephone network.

This one is the sharpest, because here the metaphor ran in both directions at once and nobody could tell which end was the explanation.

Andrew Wynter, writing in the Quarterly Review in the 1850s, described the London headquarters of the Electric Telegraph Company as the great brain of the nervous system of Britain. Meanwhile, physiologists were describing nerves as biological telegraph wires. Each side of the analogy was being used to explain the other. The engineers understood their cables because they were like nerves; the anatomists understood nerves because they were like cables.

In the 1850s an English newspaper was already calling the global telegraph network the nervous system of the planet — roughly half a century before Cajal published the work that established what a neuron actually is. The metaphor arrived before the science it claimed to be illuminating. People knew the brain was a telegraph network before they knew the brain was made of cells that signal to one another.

When the telephone exchange superseded the telegraph, the brain of course was also upgraded. Matthew Cobb has traced this in detail: through the late nineteenth century and well into the twentieth, the brain was a switchboard, the neurons were relay units, and something or someone was doing the patching. John Searle, remembering his own childhood, put it best: we were always assured the brain was a telephone switchboard — what else could it be?

And the metaphor kept scaling up as the network did. Teilhard de Chardin, working out the idea of the noosphere from the 1920s onward, took radio and telecommunications as evidence that the earth was growing a thinking envelope — a layer of mind wrapped around the planet, converging toward a single point. McLuhan, four decades later, described electric technology as an extension of the human central nervous system outside the body, which is how you get the global village. Both are the Victorian telegraph metaphor with better hardware. Both are also, unmistakably, the direct ancestors of every “global brain” and “hive mind” claim made about the internet since 1995. The fourth panel of the meme doesn’t start with computers. It starts with a wire.

A note on the dead

There’s a variant of this pattern that deserves its own panel: the new network doesn’t just explain the universe, it annexes the afterlife.

Modern American spiritualism began in 1848, four years after Morse’s first intercity telegraph line. The dead communicated by rapping — discrete signals, in code, from a great distance, requiring an operator to interpret. Nobody had to labor over the analogy. In May 1852 the movement’s first sustained weekly began publication in New York under the name The Spiritual Telegraph, edited by Samuel Byron Brittan and published by Charles Partridge; it ran until 1860, when it was absorbed into Andrew Jackson Davis’s Herald of Progress. The paper was not being whimsical. Telegraphy was simply what long-distance contact with an invisible correspondent was, now, and the dead were assumed to have adopted it.

The telephone got the same treatment. By 1920 there were mediums calling themselves “phone-voyants” who claimed to read spirits out of the electrical signals in ordinary telephone lines. And in October of that year Thomas Edison told American Magazine that he had been building an apparatus to find out whether personalities that had left this earth could communicate with us — not, he was careful to say, by occult or mysterious means such as those employed by so-called mediums, but by scientific methods. A Scientific American interview later the same month got him to describe it a little further: a valve of extraordinary sensitivity, which would take the faintest effort a spirit could exert and magnify it the way a powerhouse magnifies motive force, until it registered.

A caveat: no prototype, no lab notes, and no design for the device have ever surfaced; the widely repeated story of a secret 1920 séance at Edison’s laboratory traces to a 1933 Modern Mechanix article and should be treated as folklore. Second — and this is the part that matters here — Edison thought he was being the skeptic. He was offering instrumentation to a field overrun with cranks. He had recently built a machine that let you hear the voices of the dead; extending it seemed like engineering, not metaphysics. That’s what the pattern looks like from the inside. It never feels like reaching for the nearest machine. It feels like finally getting rigorous.

What else could it be

The tempting conclusion is that all of this is embarrassing and we should stop. I don’t think that’s right, and I think it’s the part the meme gets wrong by omission.

The telegraph metaphor did real scientific work. It’s what let Helmholtz think to measure the speed of a nerve impulse — a question that barely makes sense unless you already picture the nerve as a line carrying a signal. A metaphor that is false as cosmology can still be productive as a model. That’s most of how science gets done.

The failure mode isn’t reaching for the newest machine. It’s forgetting you’ve done it. The gear people weren’t wrong that planetary motion is regular and computable; they were wrong that regularity and computability exhaust what the universe is. The switchboard people weren’t wrong that neurons signal; they were wrong that signaling is all neurons do.

So when someone tells you the universe is computation, or that we’re probably in a simulation, or that consciousness is just information processing — the useful question isn’t whether it’s true. It’s whether the person saying it could tell the difference between having discovered something about the world and having recently gotten very good at building a particular kind of machine.

Five minutes after the invention of computers, bro. Five minutes.
